Wolf Rock

The weekend of the 4th/5th September 1999 came at the end of a hot calm week. We had been trying to get a window of weather to dive the City of Westminster on the Runnel Stone and decided that this was going to be it. We went to the Runnel Stone on Saturday in almost perfect conditions, with just a long Atlantic swell and had a great time on the City of Westminster. On returning to Penzance we found that the Sunday forecast was even better!

So, we decided to go to Wolf Rock - we launched at Sennen and headed out into the blue. We arrived to find the swell climbing an impressive distance up the tower and the eerie screech of the bird scarer. We had a scout around and found that the rock on the landward side dropped nearly straight down to 70m and that the only shallow water was unpleasantly close to the surge around the tower. There was a moment of possible disappointment but we found a ledge at 20m just NE and away from the surge. We decided to send in two ferrets to explore the terrain and it turned out to be an impressive dive with 20m viz over the sheer dropoff. When we got back to Sennen we began to discuss lighthouses as dive sites and thus was born the Lighthouse Challenge.
