During 1994 the Committee was confronted with the problem of the number of divers wishing to go out on Brunel in the peak summer weekends and decided to investigate the possibility of grant aid for a new boat. First application was made to the Foundation for Sport and the Arts but was turned down. The Lottery was just about to start and there was great uncertainty about Sports funding. In January 1995 the first applications for Sports Council Lottery funding were accepted and ours was amongst them. We were advised to go for the best boat and equipment that we could afford so that we could provide a lasting and valuable resource to improve access to diving for the people of North Devon. We looked at a number of boat builders including Lochin but finally decided upon Aquastar after a sea trial on Aquatay - an Aquastar belonging to Plymouth University who kindly took us out for the trial.
